Just when one thought that the drama from Pakistan cricket was over, after Babar Azam was named the captain of the T20I side once again, think again! Now, as per a report in ESPNCricinfo, it has emerged that Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was made the skipper after the World Cup 2023, has refused to become the vice-captain of the T20 World Cup-bound team.
The report further says that the PCB selection panel considered the prospect of naming Shaheen as Babar’s deputy, but the former declined. That is why the Pakistani squad, announced on 24th May, did not have a VC.
Babar Azam vs Shaheen Afridi
The captaincy issue has been lingering on for a long time, and it seems that the PCB also goofed in this regard. When captaincy was taken away from Shaheen and handed over to Babar again, PCB put out a statement where the former allegedly gave words of encouragement to the other. But Shaheen soon refuted saying anything like this.
In fact, soon after this Mohsin Naqvi had to rush to the Kakul camp, where the Pakistani team was training.
Who Could be Pakistan’s Vice-captain?
While Shaheen emerged as the first choice, now Shadab Khan could be the man for the job. He has held the position before, but what really comes in the way is his form. On the other hand, there is Mohammad Rizwan too, but it seems his name was rejected too. The management wanted to go in with a younger name.
