R Ashwin announces retirement from international cricket, to continue playing in IPL

R Ashwin, in a Test career spanning 13 years, played 106 matches for Team India, and picked up 537 wickets, and scored 3053 runs.

Star India all-rounder R Ashwin called time on his glorious career after the IND vs AUS, 3rd Test in Brisbane, on Wednesday. The announcement came as a major shock to the fans all over — but it seems many saw the move coming already. The 38-year-old Ashwin, who played in the Adelaide Test, will sign off from a glorious career after 106 Tests, 537 wickets, 3503 runs with the bat and six tons.

A career that started in 2010, Ashwin saw many ups — along with winning the 2011 World Cup, 2013 Champions Trophy, and two-time finalist of the World Test Championships. It must be admitted that R Ashwin proved to be the most effective in Test matches, where he not only won numerous matches for India with ball, but with the bat as well.

If one was to look a little deeper into his stats, he was a giant in Indian conditions. At home, he picked up 383 wickets in 65 matches only, at an average of 21, and a strike rate of 46. He enjoyed great success in West Indies and Sri Lanka as well, where he picked up 32 and 38 wickets, respectively.

In Australia, he shone in patches, and in 11 matches ended his career with 40 wickets. Meanwhile, in his last Test, Ashwin could only manage to pick up a wicket for 53 runs, and went on to score 22 & 7 runs. Ashwin made the announcement himself in the shortest way possible and said at the PC, “This will be my last day as India international cricketer. I will play club cricket. I had a lot of fun. There a lot of people to thank, BCCI, teammates, family, Australia team..”
