Is Pat Cummins the best captain in world? How adding IPL trophy to cabinet can elevate him to league of legends

Pat Cummins has had the best run so far as a skipper - for both Australia and SRH. Can the modern day great guide SRH to another IPL title?

It is indeed the era of Pat Cummins. First, Australia ascended into the new era, ushered by the exit of Tim Paine as the Test skipper. Nothing has gone wrong much for the side since Cummins took over. Leading his side from the front, the all-rounder has already added the World Test Championship mace and the ODI World Cup to his cabinet. Not to forget, he has also won the T20 World Cup in 2022 as the vice-captain for Australia.

Now, Pat Cummins turns his eyes towards the prized IPL trophy. Pat is the second highest-paid star in the marquee tournament as SRH picked him up for Rs 20.5 cr. And he has justified the price tag by captaining the side efficiently throughout IPL 2024, guiding them to the Playoffs with a second-place finish on the points table. If Hyderabad win the trophy, it will be their second title win after a gap of eight long years.

Pat Cummins – the leader SRH needed

SRH had a dismal run in IPL 2023, finishing at the bottom of the table under the leadership of Aiden Markram. The Proteas star was handed over the reins of the team from Kane Williamson in an attempt to make things better for the side. However, it was not to be.

In comes one of the most successful skippers of the modern times – Pat Cummins – in 2024 and he got to business straight away. Out of 14 matches, SRH have won eight matches and have lost five, boasting of a NRR of 0.414 that saw them pip RR to settle on the second position on the points table. A lot of it has to do with how Cummins effectively managed to lead the side, backing the bowlers and exuding confidence in the team’s deadly opening combo.

Why Pat Cummins needs IPL in his trophy cabinet?

Another reason why Cummins will be gunning for the IPL trophy is for the fact that he has never led a side in the T20Is. The Australian skipper, who has proved himself as an effective leader across formats, can boost his resume ahead of the T20 World Cup by guiding SRH to a title win in IPL 2024.

Pat Cummins has captained the Aussies in 42 matches. He has guided the team to a win in 28 games while facing defeat in nine games. He has a win percentage of 66.66. SRH would have selected him as captain by considering his excellent records.

SRH vs KKR, Qualifier 1

SRH would dearly love to take the opportunity to securing a place in the finals. A loss will see them playing Qualifiers 2 with the winner of the Eliminator. Possessing a team filled with big hitters, it will be a clash of titans.

A rather fighting fire with fire approach, Pat Cummins would be keen to exact revenge on their opponents. While KKR edge out as the favourites in the tie, it would be very foolish to rule SRH out from the fixture.
