Vaibhav Suryavanshi, just 13 years old and a shining star in cricket from Bihar, has made headlines by becoming the youngest player ever to be signed at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. In a fierce bidding session, Rajasthan Royals secured him for ₹1.1 crore, which is indeed a moment of pride for Bihar cricket.
However, this proud moment was soon tainted by allegations of age fraud, casting a shadow over Vaibhav’s journey. His father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, addressed these accusations head-on: “When he was 8 and a half years old, he first appeared for a BCCI bone test. He has already played for India U-19. We don’t fear anyone. He can again undergo an age test.” Sanjiv emphasised that their primary focus is on Vaibhav’s skill and dedication, rather than baseless controversies.
Breaking records and international recognition
Vaibhav, who comes from Samastipur in Bihar, has set a new record as the youngest IPL player, surpassing Afghanistan’s Allah Ghazanfar. His international achievements include being the youngest batter to achieve a Youth Test century for India Under-19 at just 13 years and 288 days. During the IPL auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Rajasthan Royals outbid the Delhi Capitals to sign the promising left-handed batsman.
Who is Vaibhav Suryavanshi?
The Rajasthan Royals chose the 13-year-old talent from Bihar for ₹1.1 crore during the IPL 2025 Auction. Vikram Rathour, the team’s batting coach, had previously seen Vaibhav’s potential during trials, where the young cricketer impressed spectators by hitting eight sixes and four boundaries. Despite the controversies, Sanjiv Suryavanshi expressed immense pride in his son’s success, declaring him “the son of Bihar.” He shared, “We even sold our land for his cricket journey. The situation hasn’t completely improved, but my son’s success makes everything worthwhile.”
Support from Bihar and beyond
Rakesh Tiwari, President of the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA), has also shown unwavering support for Vaibhav. “Today is a very proud moment for Bihar cricket as Vaibhav Suryavanshi has made everyone here very proud. I can vouch for the fact that he will one day make India proud,” stated Tiwari, also acknowledging the Bihar government’s role in nurturing a supportive environment for athletes.
Focused on the future
Currently competing in the U19 Asia Cup in Dubai, Vaibhav remains focused on his cricket aspirations. “He just wants to play cricket and nothing else,” Sanjiv noted, dismissing any distractions. As India prepares for its opening match against Pakistan on November 30, Vaibhav’s inspiring journey continues to capture the hearts of fans across the nation.
