Is Impact player rule in IPL 2025?

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the Impact Player rule was discussed among franchises and players regarding its "negative impact."

Introduced in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, the Impact Player rule became a hot topic of debate. While it added an exciting new element to the tournament, it also raised concerns. On the positive side, it spiced up the games by allowing teams to bring in an extra bowler or batter at key moments. However, it also devalued all-rounders, as teams could now rely on specialists rather than players who excel in both batting and bowling. This sparked curiosity about whether the rule would continue in future seasons. During the IPL Governing Council meeting, the future of the Impact Player rule was discussed and a decision was made.

What is Impact player rule?

The Impact Player rule allows a team to substitute a player from their playing XI during the match with a specialist batter or bowler based on the match conditions and the team’s requirements.

This rule differs significantly from the traditional substitution rule, where a replacement fielder can only step in for an injured player without the ability to bat or bowl. In contrast, an Impact Player can fully participate in the game, either batting or bowling. This enables teams to strategically introduce a fresh player at any point during the first or second innings, maximizing their effectiveness depending on the situation.

Captains from both sides name five players as potential Impact Players, from which they can choose during the match to come in as a substitute. Tushar Deshpande of Chennai Super Kings became the first-ever Impact Player in IPL history when CSK introduced him in a match against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023.
