Is CSK trying out another Malinga-style bowler from Sri Lanka, after Pathirana injury?

IPL 2024: It is not clear as to how many matches will fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana miss, due to his hamstring injury.

Even before the start of the IPL 2024, there are a few serious injury concerns in the Chennai Super Kings camp. First it was Devon Conway, followed by fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, who suffered a hamstring injury during the second T20I against Bangladesh on March 6 in Sylhet.

Pathirana, for the unversed, is a Sri Lanka fast bowler who is in Lasith Malinga mold, who picked up 19 wickets for CSK last season. With the injury, the bowler could be missing a few matches for his team. But CSK is not ready to take any chances.

As per a cricket writer from The Island, a young fast bowler by the name of Kugadas Mathulan, who has a similar action like Malinga and Pathirana, is in Chennai at the CSK nets, since team skipper MS Dhoni wanted to have a look at the 17-year-old bowler. He is currently being assessed by the CSK team.

While not much is known about the youngster, it is clear, that he can outfox the batsmen through his uncanny action. Also, it is not clear whether he could be drafted in the team, or will only travel with the team as a net bowler.

CSK Squad: MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, Deepak Chahar, Devon Conway, Tushar Deshpande, Shivam Dube, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajay Mandal, Mukesh Choudhary, Matheesha Pathirana, Ajinkya Rahane, Shaik Rasheed, Mitchell Santner, Simarjeet Singh, Nishant Sindhu, Prashant Solanki, Maheesh Theekshana.
