Chasing 190 to win, Ireland were never in the game after an early collapse rocked them. The hosts lost Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie early as wickets continued to tumble in the first phase of the innings. Ireland were soon reduced to 7/85, with more than 100 needed in just over seven overs.

However, George Dockrell and Fionn Hand put on a stunning eighth-wicket stand to keep the Irish hopes up for a series win. Hand managed an 18-ball 36, while Dockrell remained unbeaten on 58, but the target proved to be too steep for the hosts to scale it down. For Afghanistan, Naveen-ul-Haq starred with a three-wicket haul, while Fazalhaq Farooqi and Mujeeb ur Rahman also picked up two wickets each.

Earlier, Ireland won the toss and put Afghanistan into bat who welcomed back Hazratullah Zazai into the line up. The visitors put on a strong 90-run stand for the first wicket, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz scoring a fine half-century. Zazai meanwhile held anchor but was soon dismissed handing Ireland an opening in the contest.

However, those hopes were shut down with Ibrahim Zadran and Najibullah Zadran chipping in with fiery cameos to take Afghanistan to a staggering 189. Ibrahim managed a 22-ball 36 while Najibullah scored 42 off just 18 balls, hitting five sixes. The Irish bowlers, barring Josh Little had a field day with Graham Hume, Mark Adair and Curtis Campher conceding well over 10 runs an over.
