With the T20 World Cup just a week after the Indian Premier League (IPL) final, the scheduling has sparked debate about Team India’s preparation. Former cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble offer contrasting views on the issue.
Harbhajan Singh calls practice matches
Harbhajan Singh raises concerns about the lack of dedicated practice matches for Team India on Star Sports. He argues that facing high-caliber teams like England or Australia in America would be crucial to acclimatize to playing conditions. He suggests that at least four to five practice games are essential before the opening match against Ireland.
“Yes, I believe it would have been better for them to have 4-5 games, you know, collectively playing against some top team like England or Australia in America, just to get used to those conditions. But that doesn’t seem to be happening. But now, whatever small window we have, those two games, we have to make the best use of it. Going forward, it is a great suggestion. When you are playing a tournament like the World Cup or WTC, the team should play together for 10-15 days, it will be better,” Harbhajan remarked.
Anil Kumble champions IPL
Former captain Anil Kumble takes a different stance, viewing the IPL itself as sufficient preparation for the T20 World Cup. He highlights the intense competition and pressure-cooker atmosphere of the IPL, which he believes adequately equip players for the global tournament. He points out that IPL experience provides players with invaluable match practice and exposure to various game situations.
“With regard to the Indian players, people who are not part of the playoffs will certainly be going early, and the guys who will be playing or who will be part of the playoffs will leave immediately after the IPL. So I don’t see any reason why the preparation should be different. I don’t think there’s any issue with that,” Kumble stated.
T20 World Cup: Practice Matches vs IPL Momentum
The debate hinges on finding a balance between dedicated practice time and maintaining player momentum. Harbhajan advocates for additional practice matches to address specific challenges like unfamiliar conditions and team cohesion. Kumble, on the other hand, emphasizes the benefits of staying sharp through the high-pressure environment of the IPL.
Finding Right Formula for Team India
With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, all eyes are on Team India’s performance. The debate between Harbhajan and Kumble highlights the importance of crafting a well-rounded preparation strategy.
Whether dedicated practice sessions prove more beneficial than the intensity of the IPL remains to be seen. Ultimately, Team India will have to leverage their preparation, however acquired, to secure victory in the upcoming World Cup.
