IPL Retentions: “MS Dhoni’s participation not final”, confirms CSK insider

IPL Retentions: MS Dhoni is one of the most successful skippers of the tournament, having won five trophies in 17 years.

Despite many reports claiming that MS Dhoni would be retained by the CSK for IPL 2025, in the uncapped players quota, there is no clarity if the legendary batter will even play the tournament. As per a report in Cricbuzz, the 43-year-old Dhoni is likely to have a meeting with the CSK officials later this month, to reveal his final decision.

“Chennai Super Kings continue to maintain that MS Dhoni’s participation in the upcoming season is still not final, and key officials from the franchise will meet with him before making a decision. Dhoni is expected to meet with CSK officials in mid-October in Mumbai, where he will likely convey his final decision,” the report said.

Many had expected him to call it a day after the conclusion of the IPL 2024, but the announcement did not come from him. But the uncertainty this year, had led many to believe, that this could be it. Not just that, MS Dhoni also passed the captaincy baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad at the start of the tournament, raising many eyebrows.

IPL 2025 Retention Rules Bent for MS Dhoni?

Mohammed Kaif recently claimed that the BCCI bent IPL retention rules for MS Dhoni, so that he could continue playing for CSK. “You will get the chance to see MS Dhoni again. He is fit, batting at a strike rate of 200, keeping well, and that is why I believe the rules will keep changing till he wants to play. If he wants to play in the IPL, he will play. He is such a big player, such a big match-winner, and has been a leader for CSK,” said Kaif during a chat on Star Sports.

“I believe the rule has been changed rightly. I believe if he is fit and playing well, why not, change the rule and let him play. Everyone knows the rule has been changed for Dhoni sahab, and why not, you will want to change the rule for a player like Dhoni,” he added.
