IPL retention scenarios: If Rishabh Pant goes to auction, Shreyas Iyer’s DC comeback chances increase

Shreyas Iyer's chances of returning to Delhi Capitals will largely depend on the team deciding to release Rishabh Pant ahead of IPL 2025 auction

Delhi Capitals not willing to retain Rishabh Pant might turn out to be good news for Shreyas Iyer. The batter, who moved from DC to KKR, is not his franchise’s top retention choice as per report, despite leading them to their third title in IPL 2024. With Pant being targeted by RCB, Shreyas could very well count on returning to DC, a team that he has been a part of previously.

Rishabh Pant holds key to Shreyas Iyer’s DC comeback

Shreyas Iyer was a part of Delhi Capitals for several years before moving to KKR in 2022. He has had one of his best seasons while playing for DC when he amassed 519 runs in 2020. Should Pant not be retained ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, then Shreyas Iyer stands a good chance of returning to DC as the team would be on the hunt for a new skipper. Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy record boasts of great numbers, thanks to a well-oiled KKR unit in IPL 2024.

Shreyas Iyer’s batting figures when he was in DC

Shreyas had led DC to their first playoffs in seven years in 2019 where they finished third on the standings. Iyer was replaced with Pant as the captain in 2021 when the batter was ruled out for the first half of the season due to a dislocated shoulder. While Iyer did make his return, Pant was retained as the franchise’s skipper. So if Pant leaves DC, then the doors are wide open to return to captaincy duties in DC.

KKR want Shreyas Iyer to stay but not as first pick

A Times of India report has claimed that KKR wants Andre Russell to be their top retention. The Caribbean powerhouse was retained in the previous auction as well for Rs 12 crore. The report adds that while KKR is keen on retaining Shreyas Iyer, he will not be the top retention choice.

Shreyas Iyer took over from Nitish Rana as KKR’s skipper before IPL 2024. In his very first season for the franchise, he amassed 401 runs in IPL 2022 before missing the the next season entirely. He made his comeback in 2024, scoring 351 runs in what was a victorious campaign for the franchise.
