IPL Media Rights: Indian Players Salary: The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) is all set to increase players’ salaries in the next central contract. Although the BCCI won’t be matching IPL contracts, the central contract will have up to a 25% increase when it comes out early next year. Currently, the likes Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah earn less than Joe Root and Steve Smith but with the windfall of IPL Media Rights amount, it is set to change. “Yes, we are planning to increase the central contract slabs. The Grade A+ should have at least 25% increase but it’s not final yet. We are still in discussion,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Former England Test Captain, Joe Root earns around Rs 9 crores and Australia’s star cricketer Steve Smith earns around Rs 10 crores. However, the highest salary Indian cricketers receive is Rs 7 crores.

The above table shows that Indian cricketers earn less when they play international cricket compared to when they play at the IPL. However, when compared to their IPL salary, they earn more than double in those three months.

KL Rahul is the highest-earning player in IPL with a 17 Cr salary while Rohit Sharma is 2nd with 16 Crore. Hence, IPL gets priority over international cricket and Indian players try to avoid injuries during IPL.

Furthermore, the table emphasises that in terms of earnings, the Indian Premier League is superior to the international level. The reason behind this is the popularity of IPL, which has grown many folds over the years and is getting enormous revenue as well.

For instance, the title rights for IPL acquired by TATA was for Rs 670 crores. The title rights acquired by Paytm for India’s home series was worth Rs 327 crores for the period of 2019-2023.
