What is MS Dhoni’s biggest strength as captain? Former CSK player S Badrinath spills beans

Insidesport Exclusive: Check out what Subramaniam Badrinath had to say about MS Dhoni and his methods as CSK skipper.

MS Dhoni, the legendary wicket-keeper-batter, has often been lauded for his calm demeanor and strategic brilliance. But what truly sets him apart as a captain? In an exclusive chat with Insidesport, former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player Subramaniam Badrinath shed light on Dhoni’s most significant strength. While his strategic prowess and ‘Captain Cool’ title under pressure are well-known, there’s another aspect of his captaincy that often goes unnoticed.

‘Man of few words,’ Badrinath on MS Dhoni

Badrinath, who is a two-time IPL winner at CSK under MS Dhoni’s leadership dissected that Dhoni knows how to bring the most out of his players. Well, this is not something out of the ordinary skill of Dhoni, who has the most wins (133) as captain in IPL history. Badrinath gave a sneak peek into Dhoni’s leadership tactics and said that he knows the strength of each of his individuals, which makes it easier for Dhoni to get the best out of his players.

“He is a man of few words. I think the biggest strength of MS Dhoni is that he just lets you be. He lets Badrinath be, let Badrinath play his game. It is like where I can use Badrinath, I know. He knows me, he knows my game and will not try to change my game. This is what his (MS Dhoni’s) greatest strength is,” said Badrinath in an exclusive chat with Insidesport.

The ‘MS Dhoni’ way!

Dhoni’s approach to captaincy was remarkably straightforward. If a bowler struggled to execute a particular delivery, he wouldn’t insist on them practicing it relentlessly. Instead, Dhoni would adapt his bowling plans to suit the bowler’s capabilities. “If a bowler is not able to execute the yorker, he will not say to practice and go bowl a yorker,” Badrinath explained. “If that bowler cannot bowl a yorker, and only bowl length deliveries, it is okay then MS Dhoni will use him in the earlier overs and not in death.

Badrinath’s insights provide a valuable glimpse into Dhoni’s leadership style. By allowing players to express themselves freely and leveraging their unique strengths, Dhoni created a positive and supportive environment. This approach undoubtedly contributed to CSK’s consistent success as the franchise became the joint-most successful side in T20 history.
