IPL 2025: Virat Kohli hits half-century for the ages in first T20 after international retirement

Nine months after he called it a day in T20Is, Virat Kohli showed he's still got it with a sublime half-century in IPL 2025 opener

9 months after calling time on his T20I career, Virat Kohli showed no sign of slowing down in the format, albeit away from international cricket.

In the opening match of IPL 2025, Virat Kohli steered a chase of 175 with an unbeaten 59 for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.

Kohli’s memorable knock in IPL 2025 opener

Virat Kohli is the leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League, is also only one among three batters with 4000 runs in T20 Internationals. Back in 2024, Kohli was nowhere near his best in the T20 World Cup but reserved his most special knock for the final against South Africa, top-scoring with 76.

After India lifted the Champions Trophy, Kohli had a poor time in a three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka and then followed it up with a run of forgettable scores against New Zealand and Australia in Tests – the only exception was an unbeaten 100 when India won the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which they eventually lost.

However, Virat Kohli rediscovered his touch in the ODIs against England and then impressed with his knocks against Pakistan and Australia in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Back in the IPL, Virat Kohli stepped up again as the most senior pro for RCB and remained unbeaten in yet another chase. He won the Orange Cap last summer and this year, he has already started on a great note.
