IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer celebrates PBKS debut with 27-ball fifty

Shreyas Iyer debuts as PBKS captain with a brilliant 27-ball half-century against Gujarat Titans.

GT vs PBKS, IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer made a stunning debut as Punjab Kings captain with a 27-ball half-century against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. This was Shreyas Iyer’s 22nd fifty in the IPL.

PBKS spent a whopping Rs 26.75 crore on Shreyas Iyer to make him the second most expensive player in the history of IPL player auctions after Rishabh Pant.

New chapter for Shreyas Iyer

Nobody was surprised when Shreyas Iyer was named captain of PBKS, a year after helping Kolkata Knight Riders win the IPL. With Ricky Ponting as coach, observers felt Iyer would be even more comfortable given their history at the Delhi Capitals.

On either side of the 2024 IPL triumph, Shreyas Iyer made significant contributions for India in the ICC Cricket World Cup and the Champions Trophy.

In the World Cup, Iyer scored 530 runs from 11 matches at a strike-rate of 113.24 and then earlier in 2025, he finished as the second-highest scorer in the Champions Trophy with 243 runs.

Shreyas Iyer was in middling form with the bat for KKR in 2024 with 351 runs, but his leadership and cricketing acumen were lauded by everyone who saw him turn the side into a winning machine en route to their third IPL title.

Iyer’s best season in the IPL came five years back when he scored 519 runs from 17 matches  – the same year when he led Delhi Capitals to the final of the IPL, which they lost to Mumbai Indians.
