IPL 2025 scenarios: Is Ricky Ponting plotting Shreyas Iyer’s move to PBKS, amid KKR no retention rumours

Newly-appointed Punjab Kings (PBKS) coach Ricky Ponting could be eyeing to reunite with Shreyas Iyer in IPL 2025 and the auction could be the start of it

Shreyas Iyer’s future with Kolkata Knight Riders looks bleak at the moment and there are high chances of the defending champions parting ways with the skipper ahead of IPL 2025 auction. Given the reports that are doing rounds ahead of the deadline for teams to submit their retention lists, it is all but sure that the Mumbai batter is set to go under the hammer. If there’s one team, and in particular one person, who would be keen to rope in Iyer. then it would be Punjab Kings (PBKS) and newly-appointed coach Ricky Ponting.

Will Shreyas Iyer reunite with Ricky Ponting in IPL 2025?

Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting are no strangers to working with each other. The duo shared the dressing room in Delhi Capitals as captain-coach from 2019 onwards until Shreyas was replaced with Pant as the skipper in 2021. In his very first year as DC captain, Shreyas Iyer led DC into the playoffs for the first time in seven years as they finished third in IPL 2019. Delhi Capitals finished the season with nine wins and 18 points to their name. In 2020, it became more merrier as the Shreyas Iyer-led DC ended the season as runners-up.

Unfortunately for Shreyas Iyer, a dislocated shoulder forced him to miss the first half of IPL in 2021. Rishabh Pant was appointed the skipper in place of Iyer and was retained as captain even though Iyer made a comeback in the second half of the season. Ultimately, he ended up being picked by KKR in 2022.

Why PBKS and Ponting need Shreyas Iyer

Punjab Kings (PBKS) are on a desperate hunt for an Indian skipper after Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement following IPL 2024. While Jitesh Sharma could be a frontrunner, considering that he was the vice-captain in IPL 2024, the keeper-batter has indicated that he has no clue if he will be retained by the side ahead of IPL 2025 auction. Sam Curran, who was the stand-in skipper when Dhawan was injured in the previous edition, does not boast of a great captaincy record. He might be a sure shot retention for PBKS but the team will want a better captain.

Shreyas Iyer can solve the problem for PBKS, if he is picked up by the team in the auction. Ponting and Iyer’s camaraderie will work wonders for the side as they aim to hit the reset button and begin a fresh journey in search of their maiden IPL title. Shreyas Iyer has captained a side in 70 matches, and won 38 of them, while losing 29. He has a 56% win percentage, which is one of the highest in the list of IPL captains.
