IPL 2025 scenarios: If RCB bag KL Rahul in auction, will he be made captain?

KL Rahul can be the perfect find for RCB in IPL 2025 auction - one player who can act as batter, keeper and captain for the franchise

KL Rahul is all set to part ways with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. This opens up a golden opportunity for RCB to bag the Karnataka batter for the next season, something that Rahul has himself said he prefers in the past. KL Rahul has been a part of LSG for three IPL seasons and has captained the side. However, with the teams bracing for a major shake-up ahead of the new season, LSG are interested in moving on from Rahul.

Will KL Rahul become RCB captain in IPL 2025?

RCB are in desperate need for an Indian skipper, with very little chances of Faf du Plessis being retained by the side ahead of IPL 2025 auction. Both age and form are against the South African, therefore casting aspersions on his chances of being retained. This means RCB would have to look for a new skipper, considering that Virat Kohli won’t want to return as captain.

In comes KL Rahul who could solve more than just one problem for RCB. The Karnataka star can be a wicketkeeper, top-order batter and captain simultaneously, providing the team with the space to add more batters or bowlers to their XI. In addition to this, KL Rahul has a decent record as a captain in IPL, enjoying a win percentage of 48.43%.

With the Karnataka government reportedly pressurizing the franchise to recruit more local talent for IPL 2025, the keeper-batter – who is the “son of the soil” – is the perfect answer to their findings. Rahul has already been a part of RCB in the past before he went on to join PBKS.

KL Rahul to part ways with LSG

Insidesport can confirm that the current LSG skipper KL Rahul is not in the plans for the Rajiv Goenka-owned franchise. Instead, LSG are set to lock in Nicholas Pooran as their prime retention at Rs 18 crore. KL Rahul’s departure from LSG comes as no surprise especially after he was schooled publicly by franchise owner Sanjeev Goenka following the thrashing at the hands of SRH in IPL 2024. Although the two claimed that everything was fine between them, there was no call taken on Rahul’s retention until late October.
