IPL 2025: Rohit Sharma dilemma: How long will Mumbai Indians persist with struggling star?

Continuing his struggles in IPL 2025, rohit Sharma was dismissed for 12-ball 13 in the MI vs KKR match.

Rohit Sharma is losing his ground quickly. And unlike last season, fans can’t blame Mumbai Indians anymore. Their star is struggling, for MI and for India. After 0 and 4 in the first two matches of IPL 2025, Rohit scored 13 off 12 in MI vs KKR. Considering that Rohit is not the MI captain anymore and is a walking wicket, will the team drop their star who led them to five IPL titles? It’s a tough choice, but it’s time to make that tough one.

On Monday, there were signs of struggle in his 12-ball stay. While he hit a six in his signature style against Harshit Rana, he could not find an answer to Varun Chakaravarthy. Even his 12-ball stay had six dot balls.

Will Rohit Sharma drop himself again?

Since his century against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede last year, Rohit Sharma has scores of 36, 6, 8, 4, 11, 19, 68, 0, 8 and 13. In his last 10 innings, he has been dismissed for single-digit scores five times. How long will he get the long rope? That’s a decision MI must take before it’s too late.

India captain dropped himself from IND vs AUS Sydney Test after averaging 6.20 in five innings. He is not the captain anymore at MI. He can’t drop himself. But he can ask the team to not select him like Ricky Ponting did in IPL 2013. He stepped away as his bat stopped talking.

Rohit is in the same situation now. He should take a step back and vacate the position for another player.

Rohit Sharma in last five years of IPL

  • Innings: 72
  • Runs: 1751
  • Avg: 24.66
  • SR: 131.65
  • 50/100: 7/1
  • 30 or below scores: 40 times
  • Single-digit scores: 21
  • Ducks: 6

Rohit has averaged 24.66 with just 7 half-centuries and a century in 72 innings. He has 21 single-digit scores and 40 scores below 30. He also has six ducks in those 72 innings. That is not a number an opener should have. Even his strike rate has dropped to 131.65, below the average strike rate he has in the IPL.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has questioned his place in the side after such awful numbers.

“You can get away with average numbers if you are the captain. If your name is not Rohit Sharma, you are probably losing your place in the side. Those numbers are not good enough for a player. He needs runs. Rohit’s numbers are a real problem for the side,” Michael Vaughan said on the Cricbuzz show.

Rohit Sharma a headache for Team India too

He might have won India the T20 World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy, but his form is a real problem for India as well. After IPL 2025, India Cricket Team heads to England for a five-match Test series. He remains the captain as of now. But his form doesn’t warrant a place in India’s Test team, let alone captain the side.

Since September 2024, when the red-ball season began, Rohit has averaged 10.93 with the bat. He has just one half-century in 15 innings. And in those innings, he has had 14 scores below 30. How would the selectors justify his spot?

Even Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal and Sarfaraz Khan, apart from Dhruv Jurel have fought for spots with sporadic chances.
