IPL 2025: Quinton de Kock fails on debut for KKR at packed Eden Gardens

Quinton de Knock has now played for six IPL franchises.

Quinton de Kock, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for Rs 3.6 crore in the IPL auction late last year, made a poor debut for his new franchise in the IPL 2025 opener.

de Kock was dismissed for 4 by Josh Hazlewood as defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders took on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first match of IPL 2025 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday.

Hazlewood sends back Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock, an IPL veteran of over a hundred matches, is feared for his strokeplay and the ability to crank it up in the Powerplay overs. KKR, who were heavy on firepower in their victorious campaign in 2024, decided to bring de Kock in but the South African star was given a proper workover by an Australian star, who goes by the name of Josh Hazlewood.

Quinton de Kock, of course, did not take long to get off the mark, cutting the second ball of the season from Hazlewood to the fence but he got a life off the next ball with Suyash Sharma dropping a sitter. Two balls later, de Kock wasn’t as lucky thanks to a good catch from Jitesh Sharma, the new RCB wicketkeeper.

This game has seen a nostalgic build-up because it was in April 2008 that these two teams, KKR and RCB clashed against each other in the first ever match in the history of the Indian Premier League.

Before the IPL 2025 opening game, KKR had won 20 of their 34 matches against RCB and they also have the bragging rights in their last 7 matches, winning 6 of those.
