MS Dhoni, the reason behind Ashutosh Sharma’s match-winning 66* against LSG?

Ashutosh Sharma has an incredible record in the death overs (15-20) in the IPL, scoring over 2 runs per ball.

Ashutosh Sharma played one of the greatest knocks while chasing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on March 24, 2025. The Delhi Capitals (DC) were 65/5 when he came into the middle and still needed 145 runs from 80 balls to beat the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

DC sank even further. At 171/8, Ashutosh was 32 (24). Kuldeep Yadav had joined him in the middle. Most importantly, 39 runs were required from 17 balls. From there Ashutosh won DC the match. That too with 3 balls to spare. Scoring 34 runs in the next 7 balls. That’s nearly 5 runs per ball.

The MS Dhoni effect on Ashutosh Sharma

How did Ashutosh perform this miracle in Vishakhapatnam? He deserves the praise naturally. But as is the case with most things regarding the IPL, MS Dhoni also has a role to play.

Last year, Ashutosh had made a name for himself. In his maiden IPL season, he won matches for Punjab Kings lower down the order. He was playing as a finisher and doing his job well. So after facing the Chennai Super Kings, he decided to chat with Dhoni, the ultimate chaser.

“I spoke to MS Dhoni last season when we played against CSK. I asked him what goes on his mind when he goes to the middle to finish off games. He told me a lot of things,” said Ashutosh during the JioStar – Delhi Capitals Press Room.

But exactly what did they talk about? The DC player remained quiet about that. “It’s a secret,” he added.
