MS Dhoni drops Ashwin for Jamie Overton, ‘rusty’ Devon Conway makes way for Shaik Rasheed

Ashwin had taken 5 wickets in 6 matches while Conway had scored 94 runs in 3 matches for CSK.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made two big changes against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). After losing their fifth consecutive match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, the 5-time champions have decided that they’ll have to course correct.

After winning the toss at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, CSK captain MS Dhoni revealed that they have decided to drop Devon Conway and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Conway & Ashwin dropped by CSK

The opener has struggled in all three matches he’s played. His fifty might be one of the worst innings of the IPL 2025 season, as it didn’t take CSK anywhere against the Punjab Kings. As for Ashwin, the off-spinner returned to the franchise after a decade but hadn’t been that great. He took 5 wickets at nearly 40 and was giving away 10 runs per over.

In place of Conway, CSK have brought in Shaik Rasheed. The 20-year-old has been with the franchise since IPL 2023 and will finally make his debut. And Jamie Overton has come in for Ashwin. This seems to be a horses for courses pick, and CSK might think that pace will do the trick in Lucknow.

“We want to bowl first; there’s a chance of dew coming here (in the second innings). The wicket gets better. It’s important to set the right temperament. We haven’t been consistent with our batting. It’s important to have a positive mindset and play those big shots. It’s a matter of time. We have a couple of changes. Overton and Rasheed come in for Ash and Conway,” Dhoni said after winning the toss.
