IPL 2025 mega auction may head to Saudi Arabia as BCCI looks beyond Dubai

IPL 2025 mega auction may head to Saudi Arabia as BCCI looks beyond Dubai

With the BCCI looking at Saudi cities for the mega auction, the potential venue could mark a new chapter for the IPL, broadening its international appeal and influence.

In a move that could deepen ties between the Indian cricket establishment and Saudi Arabia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring the possibility of hosting the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025 mega auction) in a Saudi city. With Riyadh and Jeddah being considered as potential locations, the BCCI appears to be eyeing new international venues for one of cricket’s most significant events.

While Dubai has previously hosted the auction and remains a backup option, Saudi Arabia is emerging as a frontrunner.

Expanding Relations: Strategic move by BCCI?

This potential shift marks a strategic deepening of relations between the BCCI and Saudi Arabia, signalling a broader global push for the Indian Premier League (IPL) and India’s cricketing influence.

The choice of Saudi Arabia is not just about logistics but could also reflect growing sports collaborations between the two nations. Both have been actively seeking new opportunities to collaborate in sports, with Saudi Arabia already investing heavily in football and other international events.

Challenges in Finalising IPL 2025 Auction venue

While Saudi Arabia is a promising option, finding a suitable venue or hotel to host the two-day auction has proven challenging. Reports suggest that while pricing is not a significant concern for the wealthy IPL franchises or the BCCI, the higher costs in Saudi Arabia compared to Dubai have made the decision-making process more complicated. The IPL auction requires accommodating the entire entourage, including representatives from 10 teams, as well as two major broadcasters, Jio and Disney Star, adding to the logistical challenges.

Initially, the BCCI had considered London as a potential venue, but the cold weather during the scheduled time in November led officials to rule out the UK. Now, Saudi cities like Riyadh and Jeddah are under serious consideration as the BCCI looks to finalise the location.

MS Dhoni future with Chennai Super Kings?

Amid discussions about the auction, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are also awaiting confirmation about MS Dhoni’s participation in the upcoming season. The legendary captain is expected to meet with CSK officials in mid-October to decide his future.

Despite his absence from international cricket for over five years, MS Dhoni remains a vital figure for CSK. Under a recent BCCI ruling, players like Dhoni can be classified as ‘uncapped’ and retained for a price of Rs 4 crore, adding another layer of complexity to the franchise’s plans.

New Chapter for IPL Auctions?

With the BCCI looking at Saudi cities for the mega auction, the potential venue could mark a new chapter for the IPL, broadening its international appeal and influence. The decision to host the auction in Saudi Arabia reflects not only logistical and commercial considerations but also the growing relationship between Indian cricket and the Gulf region.

If successful, this could pave the way for more collaborations and high-profile events in the future, highlighting cricket’s expanding global footprint.
