IPL 2025 Retention

The retentions are done. Now, it’s time for IPL 2025 Auction. In all, 10 franchises retained 46 players, spending a total of Rs 558.5 crore. However, their respective franchises released some of the big names like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer. Chennai Super Kings cleverly retained MS Dhoni using the uncapped player rule.

PBKS shocked many by releasing core players like Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone, retaining only two uncapped players. With INR 110.5 crore in hand, PBKS will be the one to watch out for in Jeddah on Nov 24-25.

Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals went for full retentions with six players each. Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, and Sunrisers Hyderabad have each retained five players. In contrast, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings (PBKS) retained four, three, and two players, respectively.

IPL 2025 Mega Auction Retention Rules

How many players can a franchise retain?

Each team could retain a maximum of 6 players. Out of the 6, five could be capped with a maximum of 2 uncapped players.

What is RTM?

IPL reintroduced RTM or Right to Match final bid price for IPL 2025 Auction. If a franchise retains less than six players, that team will go into the auction with an RTM card. During the auction, if the franchise decides to use the RTM, it can still retain a player by matching the final bid price. However, the competing team will get one shot to up the price after the final bid is placed.

What is the cost of IPL retenions?

IPL set price brackets for each category of players. Overall, there are a total of 4 price brackets: Rs 18 Cr, Rs 14 Cr, Rs 12 Cr and Rs 4 Cr for uncapped players. To retain all six players, a total of Rs 75 Cr would be deducted from the salary purse. However, a franchise has the right to use Rs 75 cr and distribute among the retainers as it wants.

What is the uncapped player rule?

Apart from the players who have never represented the national sides, a retired international could be considered uncapped. As per the rule, a player who has played for the national side at least five years ago could be considered uncapped. MS Dhoni, Sandeep Sharma, and Piyush Chawla came under this rule.

IPL 2025 Retention Highlights and Conclusion

The reintroduction of the uncapped player rule that was abolished in 2021 helped Chennai Super Kings the most. CSK could retain MS Dhoni at a lower price point. The new retention rules also gave the players the power to negotiate their salaries. While it did not work out for DC, KKR and LSG as they had to let go of their captains, it will help the players earn more at the IPL 2025 Auction.
