IPL 2025: KKR’s “mis”communication with Shreyas Iyer and Mitchell Starc a cause of worry

IPL 2025: Given the value Shreyas Iyer and Mitchell Starc had added to the team, both should have been retained by KKR.

Over the years, KKR seems to have built special bonds with their current players and the ex. Classic example is, after Gautam Gambhir led to two titles, post his retirement, and a season’s stint with the LSG, owner Shah Rukh Khan brought his trusted man back to the fore in the team. And he delivered big time with KKR’s third title win.

What Happened with Shreyas Iyer and Mitchell Starc

But somehow the team, kind of failed to garner that relationship further with the IPL-winning skipper Shreyas Iyer, and their most expensive buy at INR 24.75 Cr, Aussie Mitchell Starc. After the IPL Retentions were announced a few weeks back, CEO Venky Mysore had confirmed, that Shreyas was their first pick in the Retention, but somehow the deal did not go through.

He had said, “First and foremost, I think our approach has always been to maintain transparency and have proper conversations with everyone. I’ve not only had conversations with the six we have retained, but I have also engaged in conversations with the ones we couldn’t retain. Obviously I am aware of some of the narratives that have been going around. It’s sufficient to say that, we always engage in talks with everyone and most people understand our position,” Mysore was quoted by KKR.in.

But, now as per a report in the Times of India, it has emerged that Shreyas Iyer wasn’t spoken to till about October 27, while the IPL Retention was on 31st. On the other hand, Starc told The Daily Telegraph, that, “I still haven’t heard from them (KKR)…,”

This comes as a major surprise as both Shreyas and Starc played crucial roles in KKR’s title run. This year in 14 matches he scored 351 runs, at an average of 39. He led the team well, and even smashed 2 fifties. Starc had 14 wickets in 11 matches, including a Player of Match award in the final.
