James Anderson a perfect fit in CSK, first as 42-year-old pacer & later as coach

Five-time champions CSK can find a player cum coach in the form of veteran James Anderson at the IPL 2025 auction

Veteran England pacer James Anderson has thrown his hat in the ring to be a part of the high-octane Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) as he hopes to embark on a fresh journey post retirement. A G.O.A.T in red-ball cricket, Anderson now aims to launch himself in T20s and could possibly have a future in the IPL. If not as player in the long run, surely as a coach. And there’s one side in the IPL who do not say no to so called “senior citizens” in cricket.

James Anderson might just be what CSK needs in IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are no strangers to having senior players in their dressing room. The best and the foremost example would be that of MS Dhoni. CSK retained MS Dhoni as an uncapped player ahead of IPL 2025 auction after he confirmed his plans to continue participating in the IPL. In the past, the team has accommodated the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Harbhajan Singh, Robin Uthappa and more. So, the side will be more than willing to welcome James Anderson to their squad as they aim to build a fresh bowling line-up.

Anderson boost for CSK’s pace battery

At present, CSK have only one full-time pacer, having retained Sri Lankan bowler Matheesha Pathirana. Prior to the releases, the five-time champions boasted of a bowling line-up comprising of Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Shardul Thakur and Mustafizur Rahman. But now, like all other teams, CSK will also have to embark on a fresh journey. Given CSK’s nature of having legends in the dressing room with no questions asked about their age, James Anderson will be an apt choice.

James Anderson could provide the much-needed support to Matheesha Pathirana from the other end. Besides that, his experience could also allow him to simultaneously take up the dual responsibility of player and mentor. Anderson has mentored a side in the past as he was a part of England’s Test side in the recent season, helping the young quicks of the side. Although he has just a combined of just 59 wickets in the shortest formats (T20s and T20Is), his vast experience and expertise could come of good use for CSK.

Anderson as CSK coach

Like all teams, CSK is also looking at the long term approach of building the team. This includes the support staff as well. Anderson could pretty well go on to become the side’s bowling coach, should the franchise rope him in in the IPL 2025 auction. Currently, CSK are without a bowling coach following the departure of Dwayne Bravo.
