Sanju Samson’s struggles in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 continue. The wicketkeeper has already been battling injury, having been advised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Centre of Excellence (formerly National Cricket Academy) to not be Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) gloveman.
Sanju Samson’s injury & form Struggle in 2025
Due to this, Samson has been playing as an impact player. Due to this, RR has named Riyan Parag as the captain, and the batter from Kerala has to sit on the sidelines when they are bowling. As if this wasn’t enough, Samson is also going through a form slump.
His struggles had started in January, when he made just 51 runs in 5 matches against England. Then he was ruled out for more than 2 months due to a finger injury, which isn’t allowing him to be RR’s wicketkeeper. Batting once again, Samson hasn’t been able to find any form.

Back-to-back failures as ‘impact player’
He did score an half-century against the Sunrisers Hyderabad but it was the worst performance by a wicketkeeper in that match. Samson ended with a strike rate of less than 180, as he scored 66 (37) but Ishan Kishan hit 106 (47), scoring 2.25 runs per ball and Dhruv Jurel struck at exactly 2 runs per ball, 70 (35).
Against the Kolkata Knight Riders, Samson had the perfect opportunity to get back to form. But form evaded him again. He couldn’t get the timing right. The wicketkeeper hit a couple of boundaries but never looked anywhere near his best. Ultimately, Vaibhav Arora cleaned him up.
That ball wasn’t that great either. Samson ran towards the ball, making a full delivery into a yorker, that made a mess of his stumps. The ball was pitched on middle and for some reason, Samson wanted to hit it in the air to the offside. The plan didn’t make sense and frankly neither did the batter throughout his 13 (11) innings.
