IPL 2025: Has KKR decided on their captain? 23.75 crore star likely to lead defending champions

Kolkata Knight Riders didn't retain Venkatesh Iyer on Retention Day but bought in back on Day 1 of Mega Auction

Kolkata Knight Riders shocked everyone in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. The defending champions went on to spill a whooping 23.75 crore on Venkatesh Iyer. And as things stand, Venky Iyer looks well poised to lead the Knights in IPL 2025. KKR couldn’t retain their top-order batter, but they surely made it up in the IPL 2025 Auction.

Heading into the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, KKR couldn’t retain their former captain Shreyas Iyer. Eventually, Shreyas was sold to Punjab Kings for a staggering price of 26.75 crores. KKR did initially try to go for their former captain, but then eventually decided to pull out.

However, things took a sharp turn when Venkatesh Iyer was featured in the auction. KKR immediately went all out for their past player and eventually sealed the deal for a price of 23.75 crores. And as things stand, the southpaw looks well poised to lead the Knights.

Why Venkatesh Iyer should captain KKR?

As InsideSport reported earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders made it clear that they would be targeting specialist players in the auction. And Iyer fits the bill perfectly. His ability to hit the ball hard, and build a strong innings makes him a great player.

As things naturally progress, he is the best player on the roster to lead the team. At 29 years of age, Iyer now has the perfect setup to lead the side. He has been familiar with the franchise for quite a few years, making him now an automatic choice for the team.

Lastly, with Venkatesh Iyer’s leadership abilities, the Kolkata outfits will look to defend their title and quite possibly aim to replicate their last season’s antics.
