IPL 2025 Auction: Delhi Capitals to retain Jake Fraser-McGurk, confirms Ricky Ponting

With Ricky Ponting’s backing and Delhi Capitals likely to retain him, the young Australian batter has a bright future ahead in both the IPL and international cricket.

Legendary Australian cricketer and former Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has confirmed that the franchise is likely to retain young Australian batting talent, Jake Fraser-McGurk, ahead of the 2025 IPL auction (Indian Premier League). The 22-year-old right-handed top-order batter, who made his IPL debut in 2024, has caught the eye of Ponting with his work ethic and potential. Ponting, a two-time World Cup-winning captain for Australia, believes Fraser-McGurk is on the fast track to success.

While discussing the young cricketer’s future during a broadcast for the England-Australia T20I, Ponting expressed his admiration for Fraser-McGurk. “I love working with him and coaching him. He’s a great kid who works really hard on his game,” Ponting said. Although Ponting hasn’t seen much of Fraser-McGurk since the IPL, he is confident the batter will soon make a significant impact.

With the IPL 2025 mega auction approaching, Ponting revealed that Delhi Capitals are highly likely to offer Fraser-McGurk a retention deal. “There’s every chance that the Delhi Capitals will offer him a retention. He’s going to make a lot of money really quickly early in his career,” Ponting remarked. Although Fraser-McGurk is still developing his skills, Ponting is optimistic about his future, predicting that the young cricketer could even represent Australia in Test cricket someday.

Mixed start to Jake Fraser-McGurk career

Despite Jake Fraser-McGurk’s promising IPL debut, his start in international T20 cricket has been less memorable. The young Australian made a disappointing debut in a match against Scotland, getting out for a duck. His struggles continued, with scores of 16 and 0 in subsequent matches, leading to his exclusion from the playing XI in the series opener against England.

However, Fraser-McGurk found redemption in the second T20I, making a crucial 50 off 31 balls while batting at No. 3. His performance not only helped Australia but also proved that the young batter can deliver on the big stage when given the opportunity.
