Gujarat Titans (GT) have announced star opener Shubman Gill as their new captain for the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). This will be Gill’s first stint as skipper in the domestic T20 league.
The appointment of Shubman Gill as the skipper of GT comes less than 24 hours after the trade deal that saw Hardik Pandya returned to its former franchise Mumbai Indians.
“I am delighted and proud to assume the captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket”, Shubman Gill said in a statement.”
Pandya, who led the GT franchise to its first IPL title in their maiden campaign in 2022, will return to his former franchise after four years.
The IPL 2023 runners-up confimed Hardik’s departure through social media post and wished the all-rounder well for his ‘next journey’.
“Farewell and best wishes on your next journey.
Go well, HP!”, GT wrote on X.
Pandya’s abrupt departure from Gujarat Titans despite successful stint left a sour taste for many fans. While the real reason behind Hardik’s trade to MI is still unknown, few reports have claimed that the GT skipper had asked for more brand endorsements from CVC Capital Partners, who own the franchise. However, as they turned it down, the cricketer approached Mumbai Indians who accepted his demands.
The 5-time IPL champions traded away Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to RCB for 17.5 crores to secure all-rounder’s return.
