IPL 2024: ‘Rohit Sharma, as a batter, is a question mark in T20 cricket’

The last time Rohit Sharma played a T20I, was in November 2022, during the T20 World Cup semis between India and England.

The IPL 2024 will see Hardik Pandya not only return to Mumbai Indians but also take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma. While the decision has not been very well received by many, it is the way forward for the team. Plus, Hardik himself has an IPL title as skipper under his name.

As numbers suggest, Rohit’s form in the IPL has been on the wane, despite him being nothing short of a legend. He last crossed the 400-run barrier in the IPL way back in 2019, and since then has scored 332, 381, 268, and 332 runs in the next four seasons. But that is far from his best.

As per former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, Suryakumar Yadav is their only dependable batsman at the moment. And he cast doubts over Rohit Sharma’s form and future in the shortest format. “Ishan Kishan, from couple of seasons before MI paid the big bucks… he is in the same kind of form. Tim David is still trying to fill the shoes of Kieron Pollard. On form, one player that you can maybe depend on, the player who you can expect to come good, is Suryakumar Yadav,” said Manjrekar on Hotstar during IND vs SA 2nd ODI.

“Rohit Sharma, for me, as a batter, is a question mark in T20 cricket. has shown promise, the way he played in the fifty-over World Cups. But that’s a completely different format, when you know you have fifty overs. They bat in that fashion. Bowlers just bowl differently in 50 overs as well.”
