The enthralling Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season saw a dramatic shift as unseasonal rains threatened the later stages of the tournament. Three out of the last eight matches, including the final league fixture, were abandoned without a ball bowled. Three of the last eight IPL matches were washed off due to rain.
However, there’s good news for fans – the playoffs are prepared to handle such disruptions, thanks to a crucial rule change.
Extra Time allotted for IPL 2024 Playoffs
With the IPL 2024 playoffs kicking off, the consequences of rain interruptions become more significant. Recognizing this, the IPL has implemented an extended window for completing rain-affected matches.
Playoff matches will be allotted an extra 120 minutes (two hours) to finish the game in case of delays, compared to the regular season’s one-hour buffer.

Reserve Days Introduced for all IPL 2024 Playoff matches
A significant change for this season is the introduction of reserve days for all four playoff matches – Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final.
Previously, only the final had this privilege. If a match is called off due to rain on the scheduled date, it will be rescheduled and played entirely on the reserve day, ensuring both teams get a fair shot.
What happens if Reserve Day is washed out too?
Even with the reserve days, rain remains a wild card. If a IPL 2024 playoff match is abandoned on both the scheduled date and the reserve day, the team’s position on the points table at the end of the league stage will determine the winner. The team that finished higher will be declared victorious.
Super over: Ultimate Tie-Breaker in case of tied playoff match
In the rare case of a tied playoff match, a Super Over will be played to decide the winner. If the Super Over is also tied, or cannot be completed due to time constraints, then the team ranking higher in the points table will advance.
IPL Playoff rules ensures fair finish
The IPL’s revised rules demonstrate their commitment to a fair and exciting conclusion to the tournament. The extended playing time for playoffs and the introduction of reserve days offer a buffer against rain disruptions. With these measures in place, fans can anticipate a thrilling playoff series, played to a definitive and well-deserved finish.
