Salt on wounds! Hardik Pandya fined Rs 24 lakhs by BCCI for breaching code of conduct

The misery continues for Mumbai Indians (MI) after their four-wicket defeat at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Tuesday. Adding insult to injury, their captain, Hardik Pandya, has been slapped with a hefty fine by the BCCI for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct.

Slow over-rate costs Hardik Pandya dear

The BCCI, in an official statement released on May 1st, confirmed that Hardik Pandya has been fined a whopping Rs 24 lakh (approximately $30,000) for maintaining a slow over-rate during their match against LSG. This marks MI’s second such offense this season, resulting in a harsher penalty for the captain.

Rest of MI playing XI Feel the Pinch

The remaining members of Mumbai Indians (MI) playing eleven, including the designated impact player, were also not spared. Each player received a fine of either Rs 6 lakh (approximately $7,500) or 25% of their individual match fees, whichever is lower.

BCCI statement

“Mr Hardik Pandya, Captain, Mumbai Indians has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 48 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on April 30, 2024,” a BCCI statement read.

“As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined INR 24 Lac. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 6 Lac or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.”

Setback for MI campaign

This hefty fine is another blow for MI, who are currently struggling in IPL 2024. The loss against LSG further deepens their woes, making their playoff qualification chances more precarious. With crucial matches remaining, MI will need to address their over-rate issues and find a winning formula quickly to revive their campaign.
