The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) roared to a convincing eight-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a thrilling IPL 2024 encounter. Despite a late flourish from MS Dhoni, CSK’s total proved insufficient against a dominant batting display by the Lucknow openers.
LSG openers shine
Quinton de Kock (54) and KL Rahul (82) orchestrated a match-winning opening partnership of 134 runs for LSG. While a spectacular catch by Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Rahul, the foundation for a comfortable chase was already laid. Nicholas Pooran’s unbeaten knock of 23* ensured Lucknow crossed the finish line with six balls to spare.
MS Dhoni cameo lifts CSK
Earlier, CSK, batting first, managed 176/6. Their innings saw early struggles, but a crucial half-century from Ravindra Jadeja (57* off 40 balls) provided much-needed stability. Moeen Ali also chipped in with a quickfire 20-ball 30.
Stephen Fleming reflects on tough loss
In the post-match press conference, CSK coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged Lucknow’s superior performance. He admitted that CSK’s bowlers were unable to replicate the effectiveness of the LSG openers, highlighting the early partnership as the game-changer.
“It was a tough game. Home team (LSG) really played well. We struggled to get the momentum throughout the match. The 176 was a good score and in bowling we needed to do similar thing like them that is take wickets at regular interval. But we failed to do so and their opening wicket partnership was the match-winning one.”
“Heartbeat of CSK”: MS Dhoni Impact
However, Stephen Fleming also praised the inspiring cameo by MS Dhoni. Batting amidst a roaring reception from the Lucknow crowd, MS Dhoni smashed an unbeaten 28 off just 9 balls, including three boundaries and two sixes. This late surge propelled CSK past the 170-run mark.
“It’s inspirational, isn’t it,” said Fleming about MS Dhoni’s knock. He revealed that Dhoni’s batting form throughout the season, including pre-season training, had been excellent. Fleming explained that due to a knee injury, Dhoni’s current role is limited to impactful cameos.
“Its inspirational, isn’t it. His batting this year even in the nets has been very crisp. And the team is not surprised that he is doing what he is doing. His skill level during that pre-season was very high. Other years he had problem with his knee, which he is still recovering from, which is why its only the certain amount of balls he can function well. Everyone wants him to see for longer, as we do. The 2-3 overs cameo, he is owning that space. It’s up to risk of batting unit to put us in a good position where he can push us to the top. And he is doing this every moment at the time for us. And what an amazing atmosphere when he comes to bat.“
