IPL 2024: MS Dhoni hinted at captaincy change last year itself, reveals new CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj also revealed that he was asked a lot of questions after Dhoni took to social media a few days ago to talk about a 'new role'.

New Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad revealed that he was given a hint by MS Dhoni last on getting the captaincy baton. In a decision that left the cricketing fraternity stunned, MS Dhoni on Thursday stepped down from the CSK captaincy as Ruturaj Gaikwad took charge.

The new captain of CSK, speaking in a recent video released by the IPL, disclosed that Dhoni had informed him that he shouldn’t be surprised to be captain. Ruturaj Gaikwad added that MS Dhoni had begun including him in some of the drills for practice matches.

I don’t think so I need to change anything. Last year itself, Mahi bhai had just hinted about captaincy at some point in time. Just hinted that ‘be ready, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to you. So when we came into the camp, obviously he made me involved in some of the practice match simulation,” said Ruturaj.

Dhoni’s ‘new role’ post posed a lot of questions: Gaikwad

A few days ago, Dhoni posted on social media about a ‘new role’. Ruturaj said the post prompted a lot of questions to him regarding the change in captaincy.

I remember him posting about the new role on social media. Everybody was just pointing towards me and asking me, ‘whether you are the next captain’. I was like maybe it meant something else for social media or something. Back of the mind it was there, but then he came in a week ago and said he had decided this and this. But definitely now that I am here, i am definitely looking forward to it,” Ruturaj said.

‘Plenty of options for help in leadership’

He also opened up on having multiple leaders in the team.

Feels great to be a part of such a wonderful franchise and to be able to be trusted by MS Dhoni for a leadership role. We think its a great backbone to have him (MS Dhoni) still on the field. I have Ajju bhai (Ajinkya Rahane) as well, I have Jaddu bhai (Ravindra Jadeja) as well, so plenty of option to look around. I think we’ll be fine,” Ruturaj said.
