Shubman Gill, the young Indian batter, has navigated a whirlwind six months. From battling dengue during the World Cup to becoming a Test regular and now leading the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2024, Gill has experienced a lot. But his focus remains simple for ICC T20 World Cup selection: score runs and win matches.
Period of Growth for Shubman Gill
The past year has been a significant learning curve for Shubman Gill. He cemented his spot as India’s No.3 Test batsman and now dons the captain’s hat for the Gujarat Titans. While the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 selection looms large, Shubman Gill prioritizes his current responsibilities.
Leading From Front: Captaincy and Focus
Reflecting on his captaincy stint, Shubman Gill emphasizes his team’s progress. He highlights their growing composure and improved execution in recent matches. He approaches his dual role with clarity: batting becomes his sole focus when at the crease, while captaincy involves empowering his players off the field.
Shubman Gill told News18: “I honestly only think about my batting when I’m batting. And when I’m not batting, I don’t really think about my batting. As far as captaincy is concerned, I think captaincy happens on the ground most of the time and as a captain, my job before the match or on non-match days is to be able to make my players feel as secure as possible, make them feel secure in their plans, give them the confidence that they would be able to execute those plans when the pressure is on them. That is what my job is as the captain.”
“As a captain, and as a player, I think now we are approaching the business end of the tournament and I think as a team we are in a very balanced shape. We are much more composed in comparison to what we were in the beginning of the IPL and I think the way that we’ve been playing cricket in the past couple of matches has been very pleasing to see and I’m very happy with that.“
T20 World Cup Ambitions for Shubman Gill
Addressing the T20 World Cup selection, Gill downplays any anxieties. He maintains a pragmatic approach, believing consistent runs and victories will naturally put him in contention.
“Honestly, it’s not that difficult. You keep scoring, you keep winning. Everything will take care of itself.”
