Punjab Kings have yet to secure an IPL trophy, with their captains’ performances also failing to impress. Yuvraj Singh, the franchise’s inaugural captain, boasts the highest winning percentage of 58.62%.
Their standout performance occurred in IPL 2014, where they reached the finals under George Bailey’s leadership, only to be defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders.
Despite being helmed by cricket legends like Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, and Adam Gilchrist in the past, Punjab Kings struggled to make an impact. R Ashwin took charge in the 2018 mega auction, initially steering the team to a promising start.
However, Ashwin was replaced after the 2019 season, subsequently joining the Delhi Capitals. KL Rahul captained the side for two seasons, but his leadership stint didn’t yield significant results. Although Rahul excelled with the bat, Punjab Kings’ fortunes remained unchanged.
Ahead of the IPL 2022 season, Mayank Agarwal was retained and appointed captain, followed by Shikhar Dhawan and then Sam Curran in 2022. Last season’s IPL proved challenging for Punjab Kings, finishing in eighth place with a mere 12 points.
Now, Dhawan is tasked with leading Punjab Kings in IPL 2024, aiming to guide them to their maiden IPL title with renewed determination.
