The Mumbai Indians (MI), a powerhouse in IPL history with five championship titles, have hit a major roadblock this season. They were officially knocked out of playoff contention on Wednesday, marking a disappointing end to their campaign. While various factors contribute to a team’s performance, former cricketing great AB de Villiers has sparked a conversation about the leadership style of captain Hardik Pandya.
AB de Villiers raises concerns about Hardik Pandya
AB de Villiers, a former batsman for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, believes that Hardik Pandya‘s leadership might not be the perfect fit for the experienced players in the MI dressing room.
He describes Pandya’s style as “bravado” and “ego-driven,” potentially clashing with the seasoned veterans on the team. De Villiers compares it to CSK legend MS Dhoni leadership, highlighting the outward confidence that can be effective in certain situations. However, he suggests that this approach may not resonate with players who already have a wealth of experience.
What did ABD said on Hardik Pandya?
“MI have been very disappointing.I backed them to qualify for the knockout stages, but that didn’t happen. What has gone wrong? 5th in 2021, 10th in 2022, 4th in 2023 and they are 9th. Rohit Sharma said, ‘I have played under a lot of captains. It’s nothing new. You do what you are required to do and I have been doing that for the last one month.’ You can read a little bit into that if you want to,” he said on his YouTube channel.
“The captaincy style of Hardik Pandya is quite bravado. It’s ego-driven in a way, chest out. I don’t think how he walks on the field is always genuine, but he has decided that is his way of captaincy. Almost like MS. Cool, calm, collective, always got your chest out. But when you play with a lot of experienced players, guys who have been around for ages… They don’t buy into that. It worked at GT, where it was a younger team. Sometimes, inexperienced players love to follow that kind of leadership,” de Villiers added.

Reports of senior player concerns in Mumbai Indians
News reports indicate that senior members of the MI squad, including Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav, have expressed concerns about Hardik Pandya’s captaincy style.
These concerns reportedly contributed to a decline in team morale throughout the season. Meetings were held following losses, with players voicing their opinions and seeking solutions.
An official from the Mumbai Indians downplayed the situation, attributing the team’s struggles to a “transitional phase” with a change in leadership. This explanation aligns with the notion that adjustments are natural when a new captain takes the helm.
Open questions about Hardik Pandya and MI future
The debate surrounding Hardik Pandya’s leadership and its suitability for Mumbai Indians remains open. Did the team’s struggles stem primarily from a leadership mismatch, or were there other contributing factors? Only time will tell how MI will address these concerns as they prepare for the upcoming season.
