The Indian Premier League is one of the most competitive tournaments. Players from the entire world come here to showcase their talent. But, due to high competitiveness, many of prominent players go unsold in the IPL Auction. Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Auction, let us look at the top players who went unsold in the IPL auction.
Players who went unsold in IPL Auction
Player | Nation | Year |
Steve Smith | Australia | 2022 |
Shaun Marsh | Australia | 2018 |
Dale Steyn | South Africa | 2018 |
Lasith Malinga | Sri Lanka | 2018 |
Adam Zampa | Australia | 2020 |
Steve Smith
Steve Smith is one of Australia’s best Test batters of the modern era. But he failed to attract buys in the IPL auction 2022. Smith has participated in almost 100 games in IPL. He is unlikely to be sold in the IPL 2024 Auction also. Smith has scored 2485 runs with an average of 34.51 and a strike rate of 128.09.
Shaun Marsh
Shaun Marsh from his debut in IPL participated in every season. But he was not able to make it to the 2018 IPL edition as he went unsold in that auction. The Southpaw performed outstandingly in the previous season, however, his omitting from Australia’s team could have been a reason for the franchise’s disinterest. He is among the select few overseas batsmen who have scored more than 2000 runs in the competition.
Dale Steyn
The legendary South African pacer has gone unsold many times in IPL auctions. He was injury-prone and therefore missed many IPL seasons. Steyn has taken 97 in 95 matches of IPL. He has delivered a bowl at 154.4 speed, one of the fastest deliveries in IPL.

Sri Lanka’s legendary Lasith Malinga is among the top wicket-takers in the history of the competition with 170 wickets. Every batsman has had nightmares since the Sri Lankan bowler made his debut in 2009. However, when he didn’t sell at the IPL 2018 auction, one may have assumed that his career was done.
Adam Zampa
Australian spinner Adam Zampa went unsold in the IPL Auction 2020. It was unexpected as he was in great form at that time. Zampa was the 3rd ranked T20I bowler during the auction.
