IPL 2024 Auction to clash with India tour of SA, BCCI to host in late December

IPL 2024 Auction to clash with India tour of SA, BCCI to host in late December

BCC are keen to avoid a clash with Christmas holidays for the IPL 2024 Auction.

IPL 2024 Auction will take place in late December but not on Christmas Eve. The BCCI is keen to avoid the Christmas holidays as many foreign coaching staff will be unavailable for the auction. The holiday also makes the availability of hotels difficult. The auction will also clash with the India tour of South Africa which starts on December 10.

“Yes, we are aware of that. It will not be on Christmas Eve for sure. We will try to look at a comfortable date for all,” a BCCI official in the know told Insidesport.

The IPL 2023 Auction was held in Kochi on December on December 23. The BCCI had real trouble finalising a hotel, while the likes of Ricky Ponting and others were present virtually. This time, however, the IPL GC is keen on picking a date and venue suiting every team’s comfort.

IPL 2024 Auction: What we know so far

  • IPL Auction likely in late December
  • No clash with Christmas like last year.
  • Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Kolkata are in contention to host
  • Final date and venue to be announced post World Cup 2023
  • Budget set to be increased to Rs 100 crore.

The Indian board also wants to avoid any date closer to Christmas due to logistical problems. Due to the holiday season, it becomes difficult to book hotels. As for the venue, it is not decided yet. However, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Kolkata are likely destinations for IPL 2024 Auctions.

For now, the BCCI is focused on making the World Cup 2023 a massive success. A decision on the final date and venue will be taken at the IPL GC later. As things stand, the event will be likely held in the third or fourth week of December.

“The focus is now on World Cup and once every detail is taken care of, we will move towards IPL. We will decide the date after the World Cup. It is most likely in the third or fourth week of December. But it will only be discussed at the IPL GC meeting later on,” the official added.

The IPL Auction this time around is a mini auction with no cap on number of retentions. Teams are likely to retain their core while making room for any potential new purchases. The new season will also see their budget cap increased to Rs 100 crore from Rs 95 crore in the previous season.
