Rovman Powell was the first cricketer to be sold at the IPL 2024 Auction at the Coca Cola Arena in Dubai on Tuesday. Rajasthan Royals snapped up the West Indies batter for a cool Rs 7.40 crore after winning a bidding war with Kolkata Knight Riders.
The 30-year-old Rovman Powell is a dangerous middle-order batter, who has played 66 T20 Internationals for the West Indies. He has so far scored 1202 runs at a strike-rate of 143.26.
Not surprisingly then, Powell is expected to play a major role in the 2024 Indian Premier League. There was a proper bidding war as soon as Rovman Powell’s name came up for the auction. Kolkata Knight Riders was the first team to bid for Powell before Rajasthan Royals stepped in to challenge the Knight Riders.
It was a big payday for Rovman Powell who started with a base price of Rs 1 crore. West Indies cricketers have historically attracted really high bids at IPL auctions and most of them have proved their worth.
Over the years, the likes of Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Dwayne Bravo, and Andre Russell have played pivotal roles for their IPL franchises. Rovman Powell had previously played for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
