IPL 2024 Auction: Most Expensive IPL buys in history of coveted tournament

IPL 2024 Auction: Check out the most expensive purchases in Indian Premier League history, as Mitchel Starc makes history

Australia bowler Mitchell Starc created history in the IPL 2024 Auction, becoming the most expensive player ever in IPL history. Coming back into the tournament after 8 years, Starc was roped in by KKR for 24.75 crore! Thus surpassing, teammate Pat Cummins, who was bought Sunrisers Hyderabad for a staggering Rs 20.5 crore a mere 30 minutes ago. That being said, let’s take a look at the most expensive buys in the history of IPL:

Mitchell Starc: (24.75 crore)

Australian star Mitchell Starc secured a lucrative deal in the IPL 2024 Auction on Tuesday, fetching a whopping Rs 24.7 crore from the Kolkata Knight Riders. This substantial move followed an intense bidding war, primarily involving Gujarat Titans.

The fast bowler, a key figure in Australia’s World Cup-winning campaign, made a return to the IPL after an 8-year hiatus. Mitchell Starc is no stranger to the IPL, having previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders. With 27 matches under his belt in the IPL, Starc has taken 34 wickets. Notably, his economy rate of just over seven garnered significant interest during the auction.

Pat Cummins: ( Rs. 20.5 Cr)

In the IPL 2024 Auction, Pat Cummins shattered all previous records in the league’s history, emerging as the most expensive player. Following an intense bidding war with RCB, Sunrisers Hyderabad secured the services of the star pace all-rounder for a staggering Rs 20.5 Crore.

The fast bowler formerly played for the Delhi Capitals and the Kolkata Knight Riders. Cummins has 45 wickets at an economy rate of 8.54 and 359 runs in 42 IPL appearances.

Sam Curran ( Rs 18.5 Cr)

Sam Curran held the title of the most expensive buy at the IPL 2023 mini-auction when Punjab Kings acquired the English all-rounder for a staggering Rs 18.50 crore. However, Curran struggled to meet expectations in his debut campaign with the Punjab franchise, featuring in 14 matches and managing only 10 wickets. He also failed to make a significant impact with the bat, accumulating a total of 276 runs with just one fifty-plus score.

Cameron Green (Rs 17.50 Cr)

In the IPL 2023 Auction, Mumbai Indians secured Cameron Green for Rs 17.50 crore. The Australian cricketer made a notable impact, amassing 452 runs, including an unbeaten century and two half-centuries, and contributing with six wickets. Green has now made a stellar move to RCB this year.

Ben Stokes (Rs 16.25 Cr)

Engaged in a fierce battle involving five franchises, CSK secured Ben Stokes for Rs 16.25 crore after an extended bidding session. Despite starting with a base price of Rs 2 crore, the England Test captain attracted attention from RR and RCB initially. RCB dropped out after bidding, leaving CSK victorious in the battle for the English all-rounder.

Chris Morris ( Rs 16.25)

Chris Morris made IPL history during the 2021 auction as the priciest overseas player, bagged by RR for Rs 16.25 crore. Known for his aggressive batting and lethal bowling in the final overs, Morris ignited a bidding war among MI, RCB, and RR, all displaying strong interest in securing his services.
