Risky retention by RCB

Royal Challengers Bangalore released players like Harshal Patel, Wanindu Hasaranga and Josh Hazlewood ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. However, they decided to stick with veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik. This decision might come to bite them back. The 38-year-old had a poor 2023 season, scoring just 140 runs at an average of 11.67 while striking the ball at 134.62.

Risky retention by CSK

Chennai Super Kings released high-priced Ben Stokes but have retained another high-priced player in Deepak Chahar. The injury-prone pacer only played 10 matches last season. The 14-crore all-rounder has always had trouble with injuries and isn’t certain to play a full IPL season.

Risky retentions by Delhi Capitals

For DC, the biggest concern is their skipper Rishabh Pant’s fitness. The Delhi cricketer has yet to play a match since his accident in December 2022.

Apart from him, Prithvi Shaw and Khaleel Ahmed’s form last season was so poor that they were dropped. Despite their poor form, DC has decided to bet on them. Combined, the two are worth 12.75 crore.

Risky retentions by Punjab Kings

Worth around 39.25 crores, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, and Kagiso Rabada are highly volatile players. They can win and lose matches on their own on any given day. Curran and Livingstone had subpar seasons, while Rabada neither took wickets nor was economical.

Risky retention by SRH

Despite his underwhelming performance in IPL 2023, Mayank Agarwal has been retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad. The opener scored just 270 runs at 27, with a singular fifty to his name. Spending 8.25 crore on an opener who had a rough couple of seasons may come to haunt them in IPL 2024.

Risky retention by LSG

The older Pandya has been subpar in the last couple of seasons for the Lucknow Super Giants. Krunal has just 19 wickets in 29 matches for Lucknow while scoring just 371 runs at an average of under 20. Do these numbers justify an 8.25 price tag? Only time will tell.
