The Indian Premier League’s (IPL) upcoming 17th season is likely to be held from March 22 to May 26, according to a report. The defending champs under the abled leadership of MS Dhoni will be looking to defend their title in IPL 2024. Veteran MS Dhoni is currently leading the charts in the list of most IPL matches as captain.

The World Cup winning skipper has captained CSK and Rising Pune Supergiants in a record 226 IPL games. Dhoni’s numbers are expected to grow in the upcoming edition. Apart from Dhoni, there are several other big names in the list. Take a look:

Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians)

Mumbai Indians named Hardik Pandya as their skipper for IPL 2024. Despite being removed as the skipper, Rohit Sharma had a terrific run as the captain for MI. Rohit led the Mumbai-based franchise in 158 matches. He was given the role in 2013.

Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Former Indian and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli ranks 3rd on this list of top 5 players with the most matches as captain in the IPL. Kohli has remained with the Royal Challengers Bangalore since 2008 and was made the captain of the side in 2011 and continued to lead the side till 2021 without a single IPL trophy. He led RCB for 143 matches with a win ratio of 46.15%

Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir (KKR/DC)

Another veteran on the list, Gautam Gambhir ranks next with 129 matches as captain in his IPL career. GG has captained Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders and has won the coveted IPL trophy twice while leading the KKR side.

David Warner (DC/SRH)

Australian opener David Warner has played 83 matches as captain in IPL. He led Sunrisers Hyderabad to clinch the IPL trophy in 2016. However, he did not had a good time with DC last year as the Capitals languished at bottom of the table in IPL 2023.
