The bowling for Kolkata Knight Riders’ previous season was not without its problems. With the exception of Umesh Yadav and to a lesser extent Tim Southee, the team’s speed unit did not produce good results. Pat Cummins in particular had a dismal season. KKR won six out of their 14 matches and finished in the seventh position in the points table with 12 points.

Cummins has taken 30 wickets in 30 IPL games for KKR while conceding over 9 runs per over. He averaged more than 10 runs per over throughout the previous season. Not to mention, Cummins was acquired for a significant 7.25 crore sum. Therefore, trading him to another franchise or releasing him might really be advantageous for KKR.

Despite Lockie Ferguson’s lackluster performance in the IPL 2022, KKR are now going all-out for their former bowler. At the auctions, they could have purchased him for less money. However, according to sources, Pat Cummins won’t play in IPL 2023, which made the team keen to sign a seasoned pacer. With few alternatives on the market, KKR were in serious need of Lockie’s services. The waiting game could have been played by KKR if Cummins had been available.

KKR Squad

Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer, Sunil Narine, Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Rana, Shivam Mavi, Sheldon Jackson, Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Anukul Roy, Rasikh Dar, Chamika Karunaratne, Baba Indrajith, Ashok Sharma, Pratham Singh, Abhijeet Tomar, Alex Hales, Ramesh Kumar, Mohammed Nabi, Umesh Yadav, Lockie Ferguson, Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
