IPL 2023: IPL franchises are targeting Australian stars for yearly contracts in a bid to extend their representation beyond the lucrative Indian T20 league. With the teams spreading their net beyond the IPL in recent time, some franchises have held informal talks with the management. IPL teams have ownership stakes in CPL, ILT20 and the SA20. A source in the know of the matter informed ‘The Age’ that the initial sum offered is $5 million (Rs. 41,16,27,500.00). However, in the current scheme of things there is no or little interest shown by the contracted Australian players but it might change as they reach towards the end of their career.

What will the contract offer? – Australia Test captain Pat Cummins, David Warner and Pat Cummins have emerged as the early contenders for the year-long contract which might be extended to 18 months to two years.

The contract will see the top Australian players represent teams owned by IPL franchises in various domestic T20 leagues around the world. However, the players would still need to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC), from their cricket board to participate in the tournament.

IPL franchises like the Kolkata Knight Riders own teams in the Caribbean (Trinbago) and the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi). The two-time IPL champions have also bought a team which will feature in the yet to be launched Major League Cricket in the US.

IPL record-champions Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, own teams in South Africa and UAE while Rajasthan Royals will have a team in South Africa.

The contract will mean that the Australian players would be able to play in various leagues around the world but at the cost of letting go of their international representation.
