IPL 2023: The Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings are in a big jolt as they are uncertain about Jonny Bairstow’s availability for their IPL 2023 campaign. With the IPL season 16 getting underway in about three weeks Kings are waiting for medical clearance from ECB on Bairstow. England batter is recovering from a freak leg injury he suffered last September. On the other hand, Jonny Bairstow recently shared a post on his official social media handle in which he can be seen running on the track. Last year on September 2, Bairstow broke his left leg and dislocated his ankle, days before the third and final Test of England’s home series against South Africa. He slipped while playing golf with friends in Yorkshire, suffering multiple fractures in his fibula. After the injury, a plate was inserted when he underwent surgery in London, and also sustained ligament damage.

Since then Bairstow has missed all the cricket England has played, including the T20 World Cup in Australia. He also missed tours to Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, as well as the ILT20 where he was meant to play for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.

Prior to this, the ECB’s timetable had indicated that Bairstow might return for the IPL 2023, which begins on March 31. The medical staff of Kings’ has been in touch with Bairstow constantly, and they are optimistic about his recovery. The franchise is awaiting word from the ECB regarding Bairstow’s availability for the IPL, his workload capacity, and whether he will be fully or partially available at all.

While Kings wait for the ECB’s confirmation on Bairstow, they have a shortlist of a few potential replacements but they have not yet decided on a player. On the other hand, Bairstow started running for the first time recently, and on February 27 he posted a video to his Instagram page showing him completing some 30-second intervals on a running track.

Punjab Kings has retained Bairstow’s services for the IPL 2023 season. They bought him at the 2022 mega auction for INR 6.75 crore. Last year, he scored 253 runs in 11 innings, averaging 23 with a strike rate of 144.57, with two half-centuries.
