“Iyer has been advised to go for surgery. He is keen to get operated by a specialist in London, but if there is a decent option in India, then the surgery could take place here also,” TOI quoted a source as saying.

Iyer might therefore be forced to skip both the World Test Championship final at the Oval in June as well as the forthcoming IPL season 16, where he plays for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Hence, he might be in a race to be ready for the ODI World Cup in India in October or November.

Iyer’s scans “didn’t look good,” according to India captain Rohit Sharma, after he was forced to withdraw from the most recent Border Gavaskar Trophy fourth Test in Ahmedabad due to a recurrence of the injury.

The middle-order batsman had sought advice from Mumbai-based spine specialist Dr. Abhay Nene, who practises at Bombay and Lilavati hospitals. According to rumours, Iyer is also undergoing ayurvedic treatment for his ailing back.
