Official working closely with SRH management informed InsideSport, “Team will gun for a BIG ALLROUNDER at IPL Auction. Yes, Green, Stokes & Curran kind players will be on radar. But our decision-making will be dependent on the fact that whether these players are available for full IPL Window or not.”
What they need
- A top-order batter who can also be captain (unless they are ready to gamble on Bhuvneshwar Kumar).
- A wicket-taking wristspinner.
- A pace-bowling allrounder.
- A wicketkeeper (They have Glenn Phillips but he is a reluctant gloveman)

SRH are in a dire need of a seam-bowling all-rounder having released the likes of Romario Shepherd. Sean Abbott also adds value to the batting in the lower order. With Nicholas Pooran also gone, their batting has gone down a bit. Hence, the Organe Army will need not only someone like Cameron Green or Ben Stokes or Sam Curran. All three have been proven batters and bowlers and are in form.
The 2016 champions are the only team without a captain after Retention. While Aiden Markram is held in high regard, Ben Stokes could fill the void in the middle order. The England Test captain can slot in anywhere across the top order and also chip in with the ball regularly. His heroics at the T20 WC Final will be fresh in the minds of many, including SRH.
Why are Sunrisers chasing Stokes and Green?
- Sunrisers are in desperate need of all-rounders, with only Washington Sundar retained.
- Their lack of consistent performers and game-changers have cost them dearly in the last two seasons.
- Furthermore, Stokes provides a captaincy alternative, with their current bet placed on Aiden Markram.
- Green had success at the top of the order in India and could slot in place of the released Williamson.
Stokes’ international teammate Sam Curran is also an option. Curran is an excellent death bowling option and a power hitter lower down the order. Cameron Green has impressed scouts, but questions surround his availability. SRH are likely to pursue him, should he feature in the entire tournament.

Cameron Green | 21 | 245 | 16.33 | 137.64 | 61 | 5 | 9.04 | 26.4 | 39.8 | 2/16 |
Sam Curran | 145 | 1731 | 20.85 | 135.65 | 72* | 149 | 8.43 | 18.1 | 25.56 | 5/10 |
Sunrisers Hyderabad have a solid batting unit with Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram. Washington Sundar slots in as a finisher alongside Abdul Samad. That leaves SRH in desperate need of an all-rounder. After two awful seasons in the bottom half, the Sunrisers will be keen to get their auction right this time around. Since 2020, the franchise has lost – David Warner, Shikhar Dhawan, and Rashid Khan and has now released Kane Williamson.
They have the most money – INR 42.25 crore (USD 5 million approx.) – to spend at the auction. They have four vacancies for overseas players and a whopping 13 vacancies overall.

Australia are the frontrunners to book WTC Finals berth. As the WTC Final will start on June 7, Australia would want to keep the all-rounder fresh. Recently, Australia coach Andrew McDonald said that Cricket Australia will take a call on his IPL NOC at a later date. England will play a Test against Ireland from June 1. Hence, their English Test players are unlikely to be available in the playoffs.
“It’s frustrating to not know whether the said player will be available for the entire duration of the tournament. A lot of planning goes before the auction. For example, if we are picking a certain player and he is missing the playoffs, do we have a backup? One should understand that we cannot sign a replacement for a player if he is not injured or has not pulled out. We hope to get a concrete response before the auction,” one of the franchise officials told InsideSport.
Why the confusion regarding Cameron Green? –
- Cameron Green is set to be IPL Auction’s hot property.
- The all-rounder impressed everyone during the IND vs AUS series before T20 World Cup.
- Multiple franchises have cleared the salary purse for the all-rounder.
- While he has registered for the auction, Australia coach Andrew McDonald has put a question mark on his availability.
- He told Australian media that due to workload management, he may not get the NOC from Cricket Australia.
