IPL 2022 – Captaincy Changes IPL 2022? Over the years, the captains in the Indian Premier League have become the face of the franchises. The likes of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma have built teams around them to make a winning combination. But after IPL 2021 season, the IPL franchises will undergo massive changes in IPL 2022 – check the expected changes in leadership.

Captaincy Changes IPL 2022: Right from the introduction of two new teams to the mega auction and an overhaul of the squad, IPL will sport a new look and that will put some of the captains’ jobs in danger. While two captains Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have already decided to step down, MS Dhoni is yet to take a call on his playing career and that could see him step down. KKR skipper Eoin Morgan’s individual form could see him step down while after an underwhelming captaincy, Sanju Samson could also step down.

IPL 2022 – Captaincy Changes IPL 2022: InsideSport takes a look at the captains, who are likely to step down or removed from captaincy after IPL 2021, especially with the mega auction.

Insidesport
Virat Kohli (RCB) – Leaving: After 8 years at the helm of Royal Challengers Bangalore, Virat Kohli announced that he will step down from the captaincy due to workload management. Despite personal records and some milestones, Kohli’s captaincy record has been poor. RCB haven’t won a title and Kohli has returned with a winning percentage of 48.16%.

Insidesport

Sanju Samson (RR) – Doubtful: In his first year as a Rajasthan Royals captain, Sanju Samson did well individually notching up more than 400 runs but his team had an underwhelming performance, finishing 7th with five wins and nine losses.

Insidesport

KL Rahul (PBKS) – Leaving: Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul has hit a green patch since becoming the PBKS skipper in 2018. He is the only Indian batsman to score more than 500 runs in the last four seasons. But despite his top-notch performance, Punjab Kings have struggled, finishing 7th, 6th, 6th and 6th respectively in the last four seasons. But as he has decided to mutually part ways amid interest from many franchises, PBKS are likely to have a new captain next season.

Insidesport

Kane Williamson (SRH) – Doubtful: The New Zealand skipper had big shoes to fill as he was appointed the Sunrisers Hyderabad captain midway through the season, replacing David Warner. But he could not change the fortunes and as SRH are looking to overhaul the squad from grounds up at the mega auction.

Insidesport

Rishabh Pant (DC) – Doubtful: Delhi Capitals played a gamble appointing Rishabh Pant with Shreyas Iyer out of Phase 1 due to a shoulder injury despite the presence of senior players. To have continuity, DC management decided to retain him for the season. But as Shreyas Iyer is fit and the franchise is set to undergo a major overhaul due to the IPL 2022 mega auction, Rishabh Pant is likely to be replaced.

Insidesport
Eoin Morgan (KKR) – Doubtful – Even though Kolkata Knight Riders saw a massive turn around in the 2nd phase, qualifying for the playoffs from a 7th place finish in Phase 1, it was largely due to their players and not the World Cup-winning captain. His poor individual form hurt the team’s balance and as he is one of the foreign players in the squad. With Dinesh Karthik likely to call it quits, the team may go for an Indian face to retain the balance of the squad.

Insidesport

MS Dhoni (CSK) – Doubtful: At 41, MS Dhoni is still one of the best captains in the tournament. But his poor form and age is going to be a factor. Furthermore, Dhoni remains doubtful about his playing career and could retire and take up a mentor role if CSK win the title this season. That will see CSK opting for a younger captain with Ravindra Jadeja’s name doing the rounds.

Insidesport
Rohit Sharma (MI) – 100% Retained: The only captain, whose place is secured is Rohit Sharma. The most successful captain of the tournament with five titles, Rohit Sharma is surely going to be retained and will lead Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022.
