This was Suryakumar’s first game of the season as he missed the last two games due to a thumb injury. He had sustained during the limited overs series against West Indies last month.
He subsequently missed the T20 series against Sri Lanka and was recuperating at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). While he joined the Mumbai Indians camp before their season opener against Delhi Capitals, he sat out in the first two matches.
While he was expected to make a comeback in the last game, he finally returned to the side in the important clash against Kolkata Knight Riders. Having suffered two losses, Mumbai needed Suryakumar in their middle order and he replaced Anmolpreet Singh on Wednesday.
He walked in to bat at a time when KKR bowlers were dominating the game. He started his innings slowly by scoring 10 runs of the first 18 balls that he faced. Just before the 13th over, Suryakumar scored his first boundary by pulling an Umesh Yadav delivery towards deep-midwicket boundary. He followed it up with a delightful uppercut, sending the ball over third man for a six.
From then on, he accelerated his innings and stitched a good 83 run partnership with Tilak Varma. He reached his fifty with his typical upper cut, scoring a boundary. In the first ball off the 20th over, he looked to hit big but was caught behind when the scores was 138. His brilliant knock rescued Mumbai Indians and a late flurry from Pollard helped them score 161 for the loss of four wickets.
Speaking after the innings, Suryakumar was confident about the total. “We have put a good score on the board and I feel there are lot of runs on the board for our bowlers to defend.”
He also spoke about his game plan by saying, “I just wanted to spend sometime in the middle and just looked to hit to long-on, long off and run between the wicekts to take my time. I knew if I played 15-17 balls, I can take it from there.”
It remains to be seen whether Surya’s brilliant knock can give the five-time champions their first win of the season.
