IPL 2022: Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting revealed that he had to take a tough call between either staying back in Australia to attend Rod Marsh and Shane Warne’s funeral or come to India and join the Delhi Capitals. The former Australian captain after much thought, chose the latter as he has reached joined the Delhi Capitals camp ahead of the upcoming season that begins on 26th March, Saturday. Both the former cricketers were close to Ricky Ponting and speaking about them, he said “Last couple of weeks have probably been the toughest I have had had personally in my whole life. Because one happened on a Friday and the next one happened on a Saturday morning.”
Former Australian wicket-keeper Rod Marsh and spin wizard Shane Warne passed away on subsequent days, a fortnight ago that stunned the cricket fraternity. Marsh was 75 and suffered heart attack and was in induced coma until his death while 52-year old Shane Warne succumbed to cardic arrest on 5th March 2022.

Ponting then spoke about the tough call he had to make. “Rod’s funeral was yesterday, say a bit of closure around that one. Sounds like Shane might be having a family getting over the weekend at some stage. I had a tough decision to make whether to stay back at home and go to those funerals of two pretty close friends or getting over here and lead this franchise as well as I can.”

“I don’t know what both of them could have said, Rod would have said get over there and look after your team and Warne would have said, Mate don’t sit back here for me when you could be doing what you love. So it has been a tough time.” he said. Ponting however said that being back in this environment with Delhi Capitals and doing what he loves the most will make it a little bit easier.
The IPL 2022 will begin on 26 March 2022. Delhi Capitals will take on Mumbai Indians in their first match of the season on 27 March 2022.
